Route 2: Kufstein - Felbertauern - Udine - Trieste
-
This route is 60 km shorter than route no. 1, but the travel time is a little longer. You do not need a motorway vignette (toll sticker) in Austria and Slovenia, you will only pay fees for the Felbertauern tunnel in Austria and the Italian and Croatian motorway toll. In addition, this route is very scenic.
From Munich you follow the A8 to the motorway junction 'Inntal', where you should turn towards Innsbruck on the A93. Leave the A93 at the exit last German exit Kiefersfelden. From Kiefersfelden continue to Kufstein and follow the signs to the Felbertauern. Via Kitzbühel, Matrei and Lienz continue to Kötschach-Mauthen from where you cross on the Plöckenpass the Italian border. In Tolmezzo you reach the Italian motorway. Stay on the motorway until it merges into the freeway RA13 just before Trieste (do not follow the signs to Slovenia!). At the exit Basovizza - Padriciano you leave the freeway and follow the SS202 and SS14 in direction Basovizza and Kozina / Slovenia. From Kozina a road runs parallel to the highway (first follow the yellow signs 'Koper', later turn towards Buzet / Croatia. Stay on this road, following the signs to Rijeka, until Lupoglav. Here you can drive onto the A8 motorway in the direction Pula / Pazin .- Vignettes: no
- Toll: Felbertauern tunnel, motorways in Italy and Croatia
- Alternative from Trieste: A shorter, but also more difficult route to bypass the Slovenian motorway vignette runs from Trieste on country roads parallel to the Slovenian highway to Koper. To do so, follow the freeway in Trieste until the exit Muggia / Koper (SLO). Immediately (about 50m) behind the border crossing you must leave the Slovenian motorway by turning to the service station (OMV). Directly behind the gas station, you can turn right onto the country road towards Skofije that runs parallel to the highway to Koper (initially follow the signs Skofije, 1st roundabout to Dekani, at the 2nd roundabout to Bertoki, at the 3rd roundabout (after passing Bertoki) to Sv. Anton, then follow the yellow signs to Koper, where Pula is signposted). From Koper to Pula see Route 1 .
